School books on the internet

With the introduction of the new teaching plan “Kunnsksapsløftet (Knowledge Promotion)” and Reform 2006, which includes the promise to adapt education for every individual student, the schoolbook publishers have had to go back to the drawing board. What is the future of the traditional school text book when every pupil has their own pc? The Aschehoug publishing house wanted to use this opportunity to develop a new generation of web-based learning resources which will work in harmony with school text books.

The authors of Aschehoug’s text books have in depth specialist knowledge of their subject and teaching experience. The publishing house would also like them to write the educational resources on the internet. Because writing a book is completely different from writing for the internet, Expology developed a process to conceptualise and adapt the content of a school book, as well as a model for interaction between a book and the net. In workshops led by Expology, teams of writers were able to adopt their teaching concepts for the internet.   Of the 16 planned new school works for Aschehoug junior high schools, more than 30% developed their own net concept for the teaching work. A number of writers had to prioritise final work on the “paper book”, but began work on writing the net version later on. Expology have been brought in to assist the writers of the text books with writing for the web.
