The Danish Parliament Politician for a day The Danish Parliament wanted to encourage young people to become more involved in politics. Through the establishment of a visitor centre in the cellar of Christiansborg Palace, they now communicate with young people in a new, involving and goal-orientated way. In collaboration with the Parliament, Expology developed the world’s first mini-parliament. This forms the framework for a democracy role play, where visitors attempt to make a breakthrough in four demanding political issues. In an interactive Mini-Parliament with committee rooms, corridors and a parliament chamber, young people can learn about the work of a politician and the parliamentary process. By working through an entire lawmaking process with all the interested parties and activities - meetings, discussions, speeches and voting, the pupils learn the most important thing, they do is “make a difference” and that their role is to participate in democracy. In groups of between 16-28 people, one is able to experience in an involving way, how politics works and the challenges faced by leading politicians. One teacher is quoted as saying “The pupils learn more in two hours here than in an entire year at school!”. “Politician for a Day” is extremely popular and in 2007 it was fully booked with 9,300 visiting school pupils. |
