MediaLab

Role play for school pupils

Expology’s MediaLab is a standardised experience centre for media houses who want to create a close relationship with school pupils by offering an insight into journalism, the media’s responsibility in society as well as the different media channels’ distinctive characteristics.  The newspapers Aftenposten, Drammens Tidende, Tønsbergs Blad, Fædrelandsvennen and Denmark’s Fyens Stiftstidende all have the standardised MediaLab.

In MediaLab, classes are split into editorial teams who then work as journalists. They follow the development of a story and then publish their own stories on an online newspaper, paper, radio and TV channel.  The centre is also used internally to show the newspapers’ employees how the different medias will work even more closely together in the future in the development and follow up of a news story.

The combination of pedagogue assignments, stress to beat the deadline, individual tasks, group work and exciting technology offers a clear understanding of the everyday work of a journalist. School pupils who have taken part have said that the role play has given them new insight into the distinctive character of the media, assignments and methods of presentation. The Employees believe that the MediaLab represents the challenges and development of the media in a realistic way. In addition, other target groups, such as companies and college students, want to use MediaLab for their own training and/or teaching purposes.
